Develop your Developer Talent

In StrengthsFinder Themes, Talent Development by Rhonda Knight Boyle

Developer is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. Less than 9% of people who have taken the assessment have Developer in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Developer talent and turn it into a strength!

1. Find Growth Roles

As someone high in Developer, your best places will be in growing people. Roles like teacher, mentor, guidance counselor, team leader may suit you. If you don’t have that opportunity at work, find ways outside of your career to fulfill this need you have to develop others.

2. Keep a Record

Document your experiences with those you work with and have had an influence on so that you’ll have a record to look back on. You can journal, take pictures, keep a treasure box of memorabilia. These are things you’ll enjoy looking at over time to recall your impact.

3. Plan the Steps

When you’re working with people, plan out the steps in their development that you see. This will give you a clear path to follow and will also be helpful to them, as well. It can help establish expectations and help you develop your Developer talent.

4. Encourage Often

You are the ultimate encourager! Send a text or email message to inspire people to keep moving forward. A thoughtful card or phone call can be just the thing to spur their growth.

Encouraging others is what you do best! Keep in touch…

5. On the Hook

It’s important as a Developer to keep people on the hook, instead of letting them wiggle out of things they promised they’d do. Don’t let their potential blind you to their lack of interest in committing to themselves and the work.

6. Three Strikes

Create boundaries to prevent others from taking advantage of you. Perhaps a “three strikes, you’re out” policy will help you move on to the next person who is ready, willing and able to expand into their full potential. Just remember that there are more where they came from! You may need an accountability partner.

7. Celebrate the Little Things

Because you notice the small steps of progress, you won’t miss the little things. Find ways to celebrate them with those you are working with. It will influence them to keep moving and will boost your confidence in your development plans.
