Intellection is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. Just over 12% of people who have taken the assessment have Intellection in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Intellection talent and turn it into a strength!
1. Study Deep Stuff
You’re a deep thinker and you need deep stuff to ponder. Either formally or informally, study philosophy, literature or psychology. These are subjects that will provide you with the depth you need.
2. Keep a Journal
Try your hand at journaling or keeping notes. Spend a few minutes at a time to capture snippets of the things you’re puzzling. Studies show that writing exercises a different area of the brain than mental cogitating and you may gain clarity through writing.
3. Plain Speaking
So the rest of us will admit it: you’re smarter than the average Joe. In fact, you’re probably quite brainy. Sometimes you’ll need to “dumb down” all that knowledge you’ve got in your head so that the rest of us can understand it. Practice rephrasing things in the most simple language as possible. This plain speaking will make it easier on the rest of us and you’ll face less frustration from people not understanding you.
4. Lone Wolf
You really are a loner and you need your time alone. If you don’t get enough quiet in your life, you can get quite cranky. You need several hours a day to recharge your batteries. You may have to actually schedule it and create boundaries so that others understand what you need. It has nothing to do with them — it’s what YOU need.
5. Read Regularly
Spend lots of that alone time reading. You’ll learn new stuff that will fill your mind with more questions to dive into. It also provides you opportunities to think while you’re reading.
6. Give Glimpses
The rest of us have no idea what’s going on inside that brilliant head of yours! If those close to you don’t understand this Intellection talent of yours, they may feel rejected and isolated from you. And they can’t read your mind, either! Those who love you will appreciate you sharing a glimpse here and there.
7. Find Others
Find people who like to talk about deep things. There are clubs, societies and other formal organizations that explore humanity, theologies, psychologies and histories. Join them and connect to others who are interested in the same rare things you think about. Finally, you will meet your match on conversation!
