Belief: We Know Where You Stand

In StrengthsFinder Themes by Rhonda Knight Boyle

“That girl is NEVER going to get married! I mean, have you noticed how picky she is? No guy can even get a second date! Not sure what she’s waiting for, she’s not getting any younger!”

“I hate my boss! He’s so stubborn and set in his ways! All I want to do is make things better around here but he’s not even open to suggestions. It has to be done his way or the highway.”

“I got kicked out of my parent’s house as a teenager and I left gladly! I just couldn’t deal with my mother another minute. She was always critical and I could never measure up to her standards. Even today, she lets me know when she thinks I’m wrong — and I’m a grown adult!”

Truth

Belief: Honesty, Integrity and truth.

Strengths: They Are Purpose-Driven

Is there someone in your life who seems to be stubborn, set in their ways and uncompromising when it comes to what they believe? Maybe they have a different faith persuasion and they seem to be hyper-critical to anyone who disagrees with them? Or maybe they are constantly trying to give you one more argument for why their way is the right way? They seem to be constantly “should-ing” on people because if it’s not done their way, it is just wrong.

You may be encountering someone strong in the StrengthsFinder talent theme of Belief.

Belief:  Man on a Mission

Those who are high in Belief have core values that are unchangeable. There is no wiggle room when it comes to things like integrity, honesty, dignity, responsibility and ethics. They see no shades of gray when it comes to something they believe in because when they make a commitment it is written in stone. They are often mission-minded, people with a purpose, who serve and give and advocate and promote their favorite cause, charity or group. The issues they are involved in are close to the heart and important and line up with the values that they are devoted to.

They have a high regard for family, faith and friends. They are loyal and steadfast, steady as the day is long. And they don’t waste their time and energy on things that are insignificant. They are often black-and-white thinkers who stand for what they believe is true.

It Needs to be Good and True

My friend, Erin, his high in Belief. She is a pharmacy technician responsible for insuring that her customers receive the proper medications as directed by physicians. Once, when she was filling a prescription for someone, she came up one pill short of the exact prescription. Other members of the staff encouraged her to “let it go” anyway — after all, most people don’t count their pills before they start popping them. But she could not. It went against everything within her to deliberately allow something to leave the pharmacy without being exactly right. Thirty pills means thirty pills and that’s all there is to it!

Love That Belief

The next time you encounter someone who is staunch and steadfast in their opinion, recognize that you may be butting up against someone firm in Belief. Ask them to help you understand why they believe so firmly, and understand that this is not simple matter for them. Making a stand for what they believe is true is something they MUST do. It’s not an option, but a deeply held conviction that they cannot abandon deliberately. They’re not being obstinate or rude. Instead, they are being faithful with everything that’s within them. Truth is not relative. Instead, it’s something hard and fast and worth fighting for.
