Command is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. Less than 5% of people who have taken the assessment have Command in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Command talent and turn it into a strength!
1. Anticipate Chaos
As someone high in Command, you start noticing the signs of chaos and disruption far before earlier than most. You may be reluctant to step in but if you wait longer, it may not be pretty.
2. Lead in Front
You were born to lead. Lead sooner rather than later. Sense when you are the leader in the room and make your stand in a way that is cordial and complements others.
3. Speak Simply
“Sugar coating” is not in your vocabulary and sometimes, others view you as quite abrupt. Practice speaking simply and practically. Thorough explanations with others go a long way toward preventing ruffled feathers.
4. Defend Others
The leadership of your Command talent inspires feelings of safety in others. Recognize your ability to provide clarity and direction to those who need it. Stepping up on their behalf will create loyalty.
5. Seek Input
You may find yourself with boots on the ground directing others into clarity. Sometimes, you get mired in clearing the immediate clutter and need help seeing above the weeds. Have conversations with others who can see above the situation and provide a Big Picture view.
6. Look Up
Although you are most often in the leadership role, there are people who have gone before you and have more experience and wisdom. Choose a mentor who can guide you on sharpening your leadership skills.
7. Recognize Your Energy
Here’s something you don’t know about you: you have massive energy. You don’t feel it and you have no concept of how others feel it. Your presence carries a powerful energy that may intimidate others. Pay attention to the body language for cues about how you’re being perceived. You’ll lead more easily when you are aware of how others are receiving you.
