“I don’t know about that girl in customer service. She seems to think that losing an account is not big deal, and it’s just going to all come together the way it was “meant to be.” Doesn’t she know that we needed that account?”
“Every time she comes home from that animal shelter, we end up with another one. Five dogs is enough! I’m pretty sure we’re going to be trouble with the county if she brings home another stray!”
“That guy is a bleeding heart liberal! He just wants to take money from my pocket and use it to support those people who can’t seem to pull it all together! Doesn’t he know I have a family to feed? He’s always got his hand out for some pet project!”
Strengths: They Are Sensitive and Spiritual
Do those people who seem to think everything is connected make you crazy? Maybe they seem to spiritualize EVERYTHING? Or maybe they are involved, knee-deep, in charity work and philanthropy? Or maybe they are constantly spending time down at the homeless shelter or screaming outrage over the environment or are card-carrying members of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)? Perhaps they seem to always be trying to rope you into giving to their Cause of the Month.
You may have someone in your life with the StrengthsFinder talent theme of Connectedness.
Connectedness: They Sense an Invisible Hand
Those who are strong in Connectedness are deeply spiritual. They sense a presence of something bigger than all of us, holding us together, connecting us all. It’s a “knowing” that we are not alone in the universe and that someone — who they may call God, or Allah, or Spirit — is watching over us. Everyone and everything is connected and everything happens for a reason.
If disaster strikes, they may sense a near miss: if they had not left their keys in the house that made them five minutes late, they are certain they would have been in that wreck they saw on the Interstate on the way to work. They are convinced that they were protected from certain disaster because it wasn’t their “time.”
Those high in Connectedness often become advocates for injustice, for the poor and the marginalized, or for animal or environmental change. Because of their conviction that we are all linked by some invisible bond, they feel compelled to work and serve those who have no champion.
We Are United and Linked to All
My friend, James, is strong in Connectedness. Recently, he worked at an Air Show in his local community. After his service in the hot sun, he sought a cold beer in the local tavern but was detoured because the parking lot was full and wound up at a different establishment. While there, a woman walked in the door and he made a connection. He learned through his time with her that she is wanting to move back home to his city and work in the film and production industry — a community in which he’s intimately connected. He spent the rest of the evening connecting her to people he knows in the very same industry that she’s looking for.
He is certain that his original parking lot being full was MEANT TO BE, so that he could meet this woman and help her! His heart sings just thinking about it!
Love Your Spiritual Connector
The next time someone with Connectedness spiritualizes a random event, ask yourself: Where do we need someone who can tend to the needs of the under advantaged?
