The Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment identifies natural talent and ability. Nearly 17% of people who take the assessment have Adaptability in their Top 5 talent themes. If it’s in your Top 5, here are eight ways to develop your Adaptability talent:
1. Notice the Resistance
If you’re high in the talent of Adaptability, you have a knack for being bendable and flexible during times of change. You lead others through resistance to change by “rolling with it,” when change comes down the pipe. Noticing others who are resistant and nudging them along can prove valuable to your whole team and the situation.
2. Share the Journey
Others who are not high in Adaptability will be encouraged as you encourage them along through the changes. You have the ability to live in the moment and to share with them how to accept what’s here now.
3. Pay Attention to the Physical
You may be one to notice tension as it builds through change and be able to “shift” into higher gear as things move forward. If you’ll pay attention, you could feel physical signs that give you an internal signal that things are about to change and you’ll be ready for it.
4. Introduce Spontaneity
You’re one who deep down loves variety and spontaneity. Pay attention to sudden, yet subtle changes and go with it. Add fun and gusto if you can! You’ll help others move along quickly — just by your quick adjustments. You make change seem easy!
5. Commit to Time Frames
Okay, admit it: you can be tough to pin down. Your belief that things are going to change — any minute now! — and that makes you somewhat reluctant to make commitments. Instead of committing to specific times, commit to time frames. Do what you can to give yourself a buffer. “I’ll be there between 5:30 and 6:45, but don’t hold dinner!” sounds so much better to you than, “I’ll be there at 6:00.” Hard and fast times are difficult for you. Time Frames respect others’ time.
6. Use Pencil and Ink in Your Calendar
Calendars may feel like your enemy and sometimes when you use ink, it feels burdensome. Consider ink to be used for “anchor” appointments — things that absolutely have to be done. Use pencil for everything else.
7. Timers are Your Friends
Use the timers on your phone to remind you of deadlines and timelines so that you can be jolted back to taking a look at what’s coming up. If you’re always in the here and now, you may forget about what you’ve got coming up. If you don’t have access to your phone, try an old fashioned egg timer!
