Deliberative is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. About 11% of people who have taken the assessment have Deliberative in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Developer talent and turn it into a strength!
1. Take Time
Time is your friend. You need time to identify the risk and determine how you’re going to eliminate it or handle it. How much time do you need? Share with those around you how much time you need to solve the situation in front of you.
2. Identify Trusted Resources
As someone high in the Deliberative talent, you’ll want to have some credible resources that you turn to over and over again. Set up regular delivery of certain magazines, news streams and other bodies of work designed to keep you abreast of any new data around the things you’re involved in.
3. Ask for Input
You know the people who are pushing you for a decision? They may hold keys to mitigating the risk you see. Your radar is up — bring it down and ask them more about their latest scheme. You’ll get more information to use in making your decision.
4. Be the Brake
You were born to be the “brake” so that the rest of us don’t run willy nilly into trouble! When you need to do so, just tap it a couple of times. It’s not always necessary to slam your foot on the brake and make the tires screech! Use your words when explaining your concerns. Here’s how that might sound: “My Deliberative sees risk here and here. Can we slow down and resolve it?”
5. Sounding Board
Because you’re such a good observer, you’re an excellent listener. Listening gives you more information to tuck into your brain, adding to your resource base. Become a sounding board for others and engage them with questions to help them find the risks. This will develop your Deliberative talent through sharper observation.
6. Prevention Prep
One of the best opportunities for you to use your Deliberative talent is to prevent problems before they happen. There are things around you right now where systems or technology could be used as a preventative measure. Spend some time looking around your home, your backyard, your office, your community, that could create more safety and make a note of it.
7. Let Go
Sometimes, you have to roll with it, even if there’s still risk involved. Sometimes there is no time and you have a pressing decision. When you do, let go of perfectionism and accept that you made the best choice given the circumstances.
