Focus is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. Less than 10% of people who have taken the assessment have Focus in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Focus talent and turn it into a strength!
1. Define Clear Goals
As someone high in the talent theme of Focus, you need clear, concise goals. Others do, too, but they may not know how to set them and here’s where you can help. When you’re part of a group or team, rally the others by defining goals, declaring them and determining dates for completion. They’ll appreciate you later.
2. Goal Post
It’s important for you to have your goals where you can see them — right out in front of you. Use a tracking board, sticky notes or write your goals down in a journal. Keep them in full view at all times. Knowing where you are and where you’re going will help you feel in control and on track.
3. Time Blocks
Your Focus talent has the ability to block out everything around you when you’re focused. You HATE interruptions. Try time blocking to give yourself the focused time you need and let others know when you do not want to be disturbed. It sets respectful boundaries.
4. Fill Others In
Let others around you know what you’re working on and that you need intense focus time. Those around you don’t look at the world the same way and may feel isolated from you, even within your presence. By sharing information, you allow them to be part of your life and grow to understand your needs.
5. Declare Independence
Because you have the ability to work for long, structured periods of time, you don’t need a lot of supervision. Seek out roles in which you can declare your independence and be responsible for results. You don’t need someone hovering over you. You need to be trusted. Have a transparent conversation with your manager or supervisor about oversight.
6. Discover on Detour
Though you hate interruptions and detours, sometimes you can discover something that will actually allow you to reach your goals sooner rather than later. Rather than be frustrated, try to learn something new. Not all detours are distractions.
7. Prioritize the Personal
Don’t forget to set goals around your personal life. Creating concrete objectives around your spouse and/or children and turning your focus on the experiences you want to have with them can create balance in your life. Those closest to you will appreciate being the center of your attention!
