Develop your Learner Talent

In StrengthsFinder Themes, Talent Development by Rhonda Knight Boyle

Learner is one of the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder talent themes. Over 28% of people who have taken the assessment have Learner in their Top 5 report. Here are 7 ways to develop your Learner talent and turn it into a strength!

1. Schedule Learning

As a Learner, you are prone to clicking the link and falling down the rabbit hole because you discovered something you want to learn about! You are a lifelong learner and need to reserve lots of time to learn. Scheduling several hours a day just for learning will give you the time you need without interruption.

2. Pursue Degrees and Certifications

Because you are thirsty for knowledge, you acquire a lot of it! You may consider pursuing formal degrees and certifications. This will allow you to be recognized as an expert in certain topics that you have dug into more deeply. Consider “wrapping up” some of your learning topics with a “bow” and get that certification or degree you’ve been wanting.

3. Diversify Learning Experiences

While your Learner talent likely learns best in certain ways, add a bit of diversity to your learning experiences. If you’re studying Impressionist art, schedule a trip to a museum or attend an art show so you can add another dimension to your learning. If love your books and reading is your best learning pathway, consider adding a video series on the same topic just to give yourself a different perspective.

4. Write about What you Learn

Getting all of your brilliant knowledge out of your head is important to the rest of us! Find ways to write formally about what you learn. Notes and journals are good, and of course tap into those. But consider writing articles for publication, curriculum for the classroom, or even a book about some of the things you know.

5. Teach What you Know

All of that learning you do is not just for you! Please share it with others by teaching. Now, that doesn’t mean you need to go back to school for a teaching certificate (though I’m sure you’re tempted!), because there are lots of ways you can teach informally. Try starting a book study. Teach a class at your church or other organization. Become an adjunct professor and teach a class here and there at the local community college. Find ways to teach others what you know.

6. Lead others Through Change

When change happens, it’s often quite unsettling for everyone involved. You can lead others through change by learning more about the changes, why they’re happening and what needs to happen next. Sharing that information can be helpful to others during the transition and they’ll begin to turn to you for knowledge about the changes that are happening around them.

7. Reading on the Go

I probably don’t need to suggest this because reading is your thing! You can increase your reading opportunities by keeping a book or two with you. Snatch a few minutes while you’re in the carpool line or when you’re waiting at other times during your day. Find a quiet moment during your lunch hour to read a chapter or two. You get energy from reading and learning and it’s a way for you to recharge your batteries.
