Discipline: Perfectly Predictable

In StrengthsFinder Themes by Rhonda Knight Boyle

“All I know is that you can’t spring a change on her! She’ll have an absolutely break-down if you try to change the date for that meeting in Los Angeles! She needs advance notice — and a lot of it”

“I swear he’s OCD. If the paperwork is not perfectly in order, he’ll refuse to even look at it! I don’t know why we have to fill out so many papers — most of it nobody even looks at!”

“No, I’m not going out on another date with him! He picks me up and then says, ‘What do you want to do?’ …Gee, I thought he had something all planned!”

Discipline: Always Organized

Strengths: Orderly and Structured

Do you have someone in your life who gets wigged out when the plan changes? Maybe you were late for an appointment and they let you know they were put out by it? Or maybe they make you nuts because of their meticulous attention to detail and if you miss one little piece of information they are on your butt about it? Perhaps you have a child or young student who is entrenched in a routine and if things don’t go exactly according to plan they have a big meltdown right in the middle of the floor? Or maybe your wife or mother-in-law knows if a single thing gets moved in the living room?

You may be encountering someone with the StrengthsFinder talent theme of Discipline.

Discipline: Efficiency

Those strong in Discipline love to create order and structure. They appreciate life being predictable. They like to plan things out and to know the timelines and the deadlines. The routines that they set in place keep their world in balance (and OURS, too!) and they are usually accurate, careful and detailed-oriented. They do things like make sure the lawn sprinklers get set up with timers, like keeping the spice cabinet in order, like folding the towels in the most orderly and efficient way possible.

You can count on them to add structure to the chaos, to set up the schedules and to keep the distractions of life to a minimum. They may like things done “just so.” And usually, they just so happen to be right!

Strong in Discipline = Keeping Things in Order

Love That Discipline

My friend, Emily, is strong in Discipline — and she needs to be! She has six children between the ages of 3 months and 8. Not only does she keep her home running like a well-oiled machine, she home schools the ones who are old enough. Her Discipline allows her to set up routines and time blocks in which to get everything organized. She creates order out of every space — like storing shoes in see-through boxes to be easily identified, like creating charts and graphs for meal-planning and other projects. And she’s constantly cleaning out a drawer here and a closet there. How else could she get everything done?

So the next time you work with someone who is high in Discipline, ask yourself: where do we need a little more order?
